School Assembly on World Book Day - KS1 & KS2
Download a school assembly on World Book Day. The pack includes a power point slideshow which explores the idea of a world without books and give historical insight into the past when only the wealthy could afford them. Some of the slides give opportunities for children to share their favourite books and authors. The presentation also provides thoughtful discussion on the importance and the benefits of reading and gives n a chance for the children to suggest different strategies to help reluctant readers.
This unit also includes a short story about a little boy who doesn’t like to read until his Gran brings him book with stories he knows through her story-telling with him. The narration details how he is gradually drawn to books and reading. This short story explores why the child is a reluctant reader and also offers strategies to help such children. The children could listen to this short tale and can be asked to pick up points while you read the story for discussion later.
Key Stage: Key Stage 2 but can be adapted for Key Stage 1
Number of children: Suitable for class, key stage or whole school.
Duration: 20 minutes.

Charlie Curls and The Arabian Nights - Short Story Extract
The only time Charlie enjoyed stories was when his Gran visited. She was one of those people who was always reading and she knew all the famous authors and all the famous books. Charlie's Gran was an amazing story teller and told Charlie stories that left him begging for her to continue when she teasingly stopped in the middle. It was something in the way that she told them. Her voice always changed for the different people in the stories and she was able to make Charlie feel scared or funny or suspicious by the way she told the tale and also by the words that she used. His favourite ones were from The Arabian Nights and Charlie couldn't remember how many times he had made her retell the story of Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves or Sinbad the Sailor.
Gran had come to stay again and this time she bought him a book of stories from The Arabian Nights. At first Charlie was excited and but then said dejectedly, "I don't like reading Gran and I hate books! They are boring." Charlie's eyebrows gathered into tight ripples and his face fell. He took the book from her hands and threw it on the floor. His Gran picked it up, opened up the book and continued to show him the pages. He looked at them from the corner of his eyes but was careful not to show any expression on his face.
