A Token of Appreciation - Extract
"Jim!" she cried, "Please don't be angry. I cut my hair and sold it so that I could get something for you! My hair always grows back so fast! You know that." "Your hair is gone!" James said looking aghast.
Delia Dillingham jumped up and ran to show her husband what she had got him. She held it out on her palm.
"Isn't it a dandy, Jim? I hunted all over town to find it. Quick put your watch on this chain! I want to see how it looks."
James Dillingham took the chain from his wife and drew a package from his overcoat pocket and gave it to her.
She tore the string and the paper with her nimble white fingers and let out an ecstatic scream of joy but then stopped abruptly. From the box she took out a set of clips she always wanted for her long brown hair that she didn't have any more.
"Dell," he said, "I sold the watch to get the money to buy your combs you really loved."
