School Assembly on Vaisakhi - KS1 & KS2
A school assembly on the origins of the Vaisakhi festival and how the Khalsa community started. Includes a story retelling of what happened on Vaisakhi day in 1699.
The PowerPoint slides run through the origins of the Vaisakhi festival and how the Khalsa community started. The slides provoke thoughtful discussions on loyalty and how it may be shown. The assembly will teach the children how Vaisakhi is celebrated today and what Sikhs do on the day of this festival and also what Sikhs have to do to join the Khalsa Community.
The pack also includes a retelling of what happened on Vaisakhi day in 1699.

The start of the Khalsa Community - Extract
Guru Gobind Singh stepped out onto the crowd that had gathered in front the platform on which he stood.
It was the year 1699 and it was Vaisakhi in India. All around people were singing and dancing to celebrate
the harvest but Sikhs were finding it hard to rejoice. It had become so hard for them to follow their
religion now. Emperor Aurenzeb had just killed the 9th Guru because he had refused to convert to his
religion. Sikhs had to pay high taxes were penalised for earning lots of money and although they didn't
want to, they were turning away from Sikhism itself. Something had to be done. Sikhs were not united or
strong and so couldn't fight against enemies. Guru Gobind Singh thought this was the perfect day to test
the loyalty and dedication of Sikhs.
