The unit includes slideshow that celebrates differences and diversity and encourages children to focus on common ground rather than our differences. The pack also includes a short story about two boys from different backgrounds and cultures who become very good friends. Jogi Pushpa Nanthan, who is new to this county, is able to befriend his class mate Oli, because the two accept that you don’t have to have everything about one another to like each other.

My friend Jogi Pushpa Nanthan - Extract
Extract 1
This is a story about my friend Jogi Pushpa Nanthan. I only knew him for a very short time but I will always remember him. When I
grow up I will find out where he lives because there can't be many people in Britain with a name like that.
He came from India and started coming to our school. My teacher, Miss Lewis sat him next to me. "Oliver," she said, "You need to look after our new member of class. He is from different country."
Jogi came and sat next to me and I had a good look at him. He was very different from me. In fact, he looked completely the opposite! He had very dark skin and very dark hair and it was so shiny that it almost looked like someone had poured cooking oil all over it. His bright red and white arsenal scarf stood out against his skin. He looked odd to me but I instantly decided that anyone who supported arsenal would be worth looking after!

Jogi was different but was really just the same! He didn't stay at our school for very long because his family moved to another
town but we all missed him when he left, especially me. Every time I see someone who looks like Jogi, I remember that they must be
just like him. And so, a lot like me too!
And do you know what? Samosas are my favourite now but not the vegetable kind, I love chicken ones!
