Guy Fawkes Class Assembly Script

An entertaining class assembly about Guy Fawkes and the gun powder plot of 1605 against King James led by a group of catholic men. The cast includes Guy Fawkes, King James and Elizabeth I, a set of poetic narrators as well as Henry VIII who sets the scene for the religious conflict that continued throughout the Elizabethan era and came to a head during the reign of King James I.

Guy Fawkes

In this assembly the audience will meet Henry VIII and see him change the religion in England. They will see how the laws infuriated the Catholics and watch the gun powder plot being planned out by the plotters. They will witness Guy Fawkes and fellow conspirators being taken away by the guards to meet their ultimate fate. The assembly is set against the developments of the Elizabethan era and the establishment of the Church of England.

The assembly includes a power-point slide show that could be used as a background in the hall or performance area.

Key Stage: Key Stage 1 role-play but is also suitable for Key Stage 2 age range.

Style: Informative and amusing

Number of children: A script for 30 children but can be edited to accommodate for more or less

Duration: 20 minute performance but can be edited.

Narrator

Are you ready and sitting tight?

Narrator

Let us take you back to the gun powder attack!

Narrator

Ladies and gentleman, you remember the fifth of November?

Voice 1

What was the reason for the treason?

Voice 2

And the plot that shouldn't be forgot?

All

Let's find out!

Narrator

In 1586, Henry VIII changed the religion in England.

Henry VIII

I am Henry the VIII and I need to divorce my wife Catherine of Aragon! She can't give me a son! I have waited so many years!

Catherine A

(Gasps) You can't divorce me! We are Catholics! I will tell the Pope to sort you out!

 

(6 children wave the catholic banner and cheer)

Henry VIII

I don't care about the Pope. I will make my own religion.

Catherine A

You can't change religion Henry! It is sacred!

Henry VIII

I just did! I divorce you Catherine of Aragon! (Goes off stage. Catherine follows him crying)

Narrator

Henry changed England from being Catholic to Protestant. Lots of people followed him and he gave churches and land from Catholics to Protestants. (Catholics boo)

Narrator

Henry died and Elizabeth 1 became Queen (Drum roll. Music. Enter Elizabeth. Stands front stage, marked with masking tape)

Narrator

Elizabeth I ruled for 45 years. She was clever and but very tough.

Elizabeth I

(Enter Elizabeth I) I am a protestant and I will be as good as a queen can be!

Narrator

Was she a good queen for the Catholics?

All

No!

 

 

Sample Extract 2

Lord Montague

Your majesty, I bring very bad news! It is the Catholics again. They are disloyal to the king and treacherous to the country! They are planning to blow up the House of Lords! They are a disgrace!

(He hands the king a scroll. King James opens it and reads it)

King James

This is the most despicable treason! Find out who is behind this at once but be careful! We want to catch the plotters red handed!

Lord M

I will your majesty.

(Goes off stage)

King James

(Angry) I will not have them plotting against me! I will make an example of them so that no one ever, ever does this type of thing again!

King James

Gunpowder, treason and plot
I see no reason why gunpowder treason
Should ever be forgot!

Narrator

Let's meet him now. He is in the cellar, He's been there for days, poor old fella

Narrator

And he is about to be found By the fierce guards underground!

Guard

(Comes on stage with a scroll)
Guy Fawkes, you are charged with treason and planning to blow up the the houses of parliament!
