The Powerpoint explains the importance of liberty and freedom and how these values are not necessarily present all over the world. The children are guided through the various forms of freedom we enjoy in Britain and opens discussion on whether this means that we can do whatever we like. The unit also includes a short story in which a child begins to ignore rules because he has just learnt about freedom and liberty at school. The story tackles scenarios where we can begin to violate freedom of others by getting freedom and liberty confused with doing what we want.

I can do what I want! - Extract

"That isn't very nice. Can you apologise please?" asked his dad firmly.
"Why? It's a free country! I can do what I want!" retorted Jordie.
"What?" Dad was surprised because Jordie wasn't normally so rude.
"We have been learning about freedom and liberty at school and Mrs Morris said that we can do what we want in this country. It's called individual freedom." replied Jodie quickly.
"You are free to do what you want but not when you are hurting others!" said mum joining in.
"So we are not free to do what we want?" asked Jodie.
"We are all equal and born free. Liberty means that we decide many things about our own lives. We have the freedom to rule ourselves. We are free to do what we want, free to go where we want to go and free to make choices about clothes, food, house and also who we want to vote for." mum said clearly. "Can you see that?" asked mum, pointing to graffiti over the bus stop. Someone had painted over the plastic panel with white paint and written their own name. "This person thought he was free to do what he wanted and has painted over the entire bus stop."
"But that isn't liberty..." Dad pointed out.
"No, that's not what it means. We are free to sing and shout, but should we do it in a public place? Mum asked.
