Boudicca and the Romans Class Assembly - Extract

Narrator

Our story begins in Rome. It is the year 43 AD - Nearly 2000 years ago. Imagine that you are in the Emperor's palace. The Emperor's name is Claudius. His wife is Agrippina. Watch out for his step- son Nero. He badly wants to be the Emperor and he is completely bonkers!

SCENE 1 - ROME

(Claudius limps on)

Claudius

Greetings. Welcome to my city. This is my wife Agrippina.

Agrippina

Who let this filthy rabble in here? Did you Claudius? What are you thinking of? They should all be flogged, do you hear? If my son Nero was Emperor he'd feed them to the lions.

Claudius

Calm down, my dear. They mean us no harm. They are most welcome.

Agrippina

Nero darling!

Claudius

And this is my step-son Nero

Nero

Yes mother?

Agrippina

Look what this silly old fool has done. He's let in all these horrible smelly children.

Nero

(Stares at audience) I know where there are some very hungry lions. Let me take them to the Colosseum. Lions aren't fuss about what they eat.

Agrippina

What a wonderful idea darling. You'll make a fabulous Emperor.

Nero

I know. I can't wait.

Claudius

Well I'm still the Emperor and I have no plans to die just yet.

Nero and Agrippina

That's what he thinks!

Claudius

In fact, I have a very good idea.

Nero and Agrippina

We can't wait to hear it!

Claudius

I've decided to invade Britain.

Agrippina

What? That horrible, cold, smell place. You must be mad!

Claudius

I've made up my mind.

Nero

Let me lead the army. Oh please, I like killing people.

Agrippina

No. No! You might get hurt. You can't leave your mother.

Claudius

You're far too young.

Nero

It's so unfair. (stamps foot) I hate you both.

Claudius

Ludicrous! Prepare 4 legions. Britain is going to join the Roman Empire. Soothsayer, any advice?

Soothsayer

Claudius beware! Beware!

Claudius

Beware of what?

Soothsayer

Beware of a woman who lives in the land of rain. Her name begins with B. Her name begins with the letter B.
